I’m a glass-half-full kind of person. This attitude is handy when facing cancer and trying to stay positive. So, you can imagine how thrilled I am with hitting close to $500,000 for Sunnybrook Lung Cancer. That means we’re halfway there to our fundraising goal of $1million… an incredible feat in just four years, and I have you to thank.
As we close out 2023, I want you to know where your dollars went. We went shopping – for sophisticated medical hardware. Up first was equipment to more efficiently test tissue samples to identify the patient’s unique biomarker sequence. The next was hardware that performs a Rapid Onsite Cytology Evaluation (ROSE), allowing clinicians to determine whether a biopsy is positive quickly. Both pieces of equipment are pivotal in speeding up a patient’s treatment plan.
That’s what donations and sponsorships do. They expedite bringing the latest technologies, testing and treatments to patients. At Sunnybrook, they call it inventing the future of lung cancer care. It’s all about improving lung cancer patients’ survival rates and quality of life.
While strides are being made, lung cancer kills more people globally than any other cancer. Part of the reason is lung cancer research is underfunded and stigmatized due to the outdated connection to smoking. Thankfully, this is changing, and scientific advances are happening in lung cancer oncology. Genetic testing, biomarker sequencing and new drug therapies are better controlling the spread of cancer and extending our lives.
Statistics tell the story: since 2019, the five-year survival rate has gone from 17% to 22%. While encouraging, there’s much more work to be done. Please continue with me on this journey to raise $1million for Sunnybrook Lung Cancer.
